In order to work in the field of recreational therapy, you will have to obtain a bachelor's degree or a college level concentration in the field of therapeutic recreation. Afterward, you will be able to pursue work in the industry. Some of the courses you will have to study include human anatomy, professional ethics, evaluation and intervention design.
Many employers want to hire people that are certified recreational therapists. You can obtain a voluntary credential that involves you completing a written exam and internship. This is available through the NCTRC or National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
Only three states require therapists to acquire a license and that includes North Carolina, New Hampshire and Utah. In other states, you will be monitored by regulatory programs, such as registration. Each state is different.
If you want to make it in the field of recreational therapy, you will have to be able to work well with sick and disabled individuals, while showing attributes, such as patience, courtesy and sound judgment. You will also have to be physically fit to conduct recreational activities.
If you perform well at what you do, you will be able to advance in this field. Those that have obtain advanced training in specialty areas, like meditation and crisis intervention; will also be favorable for advancement.
