- Scope things out. The first thing that you want to do is look into what jobs in physical therapy are in your area. You will be surprised to find out that there are many more than you may have thought there were. You can start by checking your local directory to see what types of therapy offices there are and then check with the ones that interest you to see what qualifications they are looking for.
- Check with local schools in your area that offers classes for aides. Most of the time, these schools offer job assistance, which means that they will give you leads on places that are hiring when you complete their course. Keep in mind that they will not get you interviews, but they will give you leads so that you can apply on your own for the job.
- Look into internship positions. This can be a good way to get your foot in the door at the facility where you want to work. It will allow you to start working there even if the position you want is not available. You can then show your employer your skills as well as learn their way of doing things so you will be the prime choice when the position becomes available.
- Register with a variety of online job boards. This allows you to put in your experience and qualifications as well as the types of jobs that you are looking for. When there is a match for you, the job board will contact you, letting you know that there is a new position open in your area so you can apply for it.
- Word of mouth is another great way to find about open positions. Check with friends or classmates to see if they know of places that are looking for aides. This can also work well as you may be able to use the person as a reference to help get you an interview.
- Be open to different things. There are many places which use aides that you might not be aware of, such as psychiatric hospitals and even adult-daycare centers, so be sure to check around at many different places.
- Check the classifieds in local papers as well as the papers’ online classified ads. Sometimes companies will post their jobs only on the Internet, whereas others prefer the hard copy of the paper.
- Get your name out there. Even if a place is not hiring, you can still send in your resume for them to keep on file. This way you may have a better chance when a position does become available. It does not hurt to call places to see if they are accepting applications even if they do not have any positions currently available.
- Keep in contact with the places where you applied. You want to make your name one that will stick in the employers’ heads, so be sure to call back to check on the status of your application as well as to see if any new potions have become available. This shows them that you really want the job and that you are eager to get hired on with them. Make it a rule of thumb to do a follow up call at least two days after your interview and you may even send a follow up email or letter as well.
- Make a lasting first impression. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so make it a good one. Always have a cover letter with your resume. This gives the employer a sneak peak at what you have to offer them. Keep your resume short and to the point. Employers do not want to pick through a three-page resume. Highlight your qualifications and work experience. You can always provide more information to them upon request.
